Feminist Media Production -
Make Your Own Damn Media!
Lecture by Red Chidgey
Forming an alternative press, feminists from around the world
passionately publish zines (non-commercial magazines and pamphlets)
to talk about women's lives, to share experiences and skills, and
to incite social change.
In the presention, Red Chidgey will introduce the exciting feminist
zine history, make links between young women's contemporary media
production and the media production of the second wave feminist
movement, and show the simple steps to making a media of your own!
Even in this digital age, the power of paper to celebrate women's
art, ideas, and political strategies is still strong and can be
done in a Do-It-Yourself budget and agenda.
Red Chidgey (UK) is a DIY feminist historian who is interested
in connecting the work of today's cultural activism - such as zines,
Ladyfest feminist music and art festivals, queer festivals - to
the actions and ideals of the Women's Liberation Movement. She co-organised
Ladyfest Brighton 2005, cofounded the Feminist Activist Forum in
207, and is currently working with Elke Zobl on a project on Grassroots
Feminist Media in Europe. http://www.redchidgey.net
